The middle filling at the top is an MOD, the one on the left is a DO, and the one on the right is an MO. Here is a picture that compares amalgam to white fillings. Therefore an MOD covers three surfaces of your tooth from front to back. As a quick guide, mesial surfaces point to the surface of a tooth which is closest to the front, or midline of your mouth, distal is the surface most distant to the middle, and the occlusal surface is the biting surface. ![]() So, an MOD could be an abbreviation for The Ministry of Defence, an 1960’s smartly dressed young person who drove a motor scooter and liked soul music, or most likely in a dental setting it is a code for a mesial/ occlusal/distal surface filling. But remember if there is anything unclear, please ask at your appointment. Here is a quick guide to what the dentist is on about. So what on earth does that mean? Dentists tend to speak an entirely different language sometimes…. And apparently your BPE score is 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1… Okay…. Your dentist has just told you that you need an RCT, some BW rgs, a DO, an MOD and a PBC. What is a MOD? ( dental abbreviations debunked!) ![]()
